The Franklin County Commission approved appointments for auxiliary police officers, adopting Commission Order 2025-200. The commission voted in favor of the appointments by voice vote.
During discussion, Abe urged the commission to require specific training for auxiliary officers who are activated under emergency or disaster declarations. "There—s quite a few training opportunities that I would encourage. I would call them mandatory as suggestion," Abe said, explaining that training helps address insurance, liability and workers' compensation concerns when auxiliary officers are deployed.
Abe said he had sent an email to commissioners listing recommended training programs and said he would help staff and commissioners navigate those resources. County officials agreed to have further conversations to determine which training courses should be required or strongly recommended before auxiliary officers deploy in the field.
The commission approved the appointments and recorded no amendments to the order. Commissioners directed staff to review training recommendations and to follow up on implementation and liability issues outside of the meeting.
