Lucy Martin, Story County Auditor, asked the Board of Supervisors on July 29 to authorize two temporary deputy auditors to create overlap for training as two longtime deputies retire. Martin told the board the fall season is a busy period for the auditor’s office and that an estimated ten‑week overlap is needed so new hires can train with departing deputies and cover annual cycles such as elections and the budget process.
Martin said Human Resources indicated a two‑month hiring timeline for background checks and other steps, and she asked the board to allow hiring to start immediately so new employees could be on board in early October. She provided a budget estimate: initial additional payroll outlays of about $28,000, with the expectation that permanent salaries for new hires would be lower than the existing budgeted amounts for the departing deputies and that overall year‑end budget impacts should wash out. Supervisors asked about vacation payouts and deputy pay plan options; Martin said the elected official has discretion on deputy inclusion in certain county benefit plans.
After discussion that emphasized the value of institutional knowledge transfer, a motion to authorize two temporary deputy auditors was moved, seconded and approved by the board. Staff will publish the budget amendment and proceed with the hiring process.
