Summary
National Grid asked to install a utility pole and a recloser on Mill Street to reduce the size and duration of outages; the council granted the petition by hand vote after the petitioner described the equipment’s outage-isolation function.
BROCKTON, Mass. — The Brockton City Council on July 28 granted National Grid’s petition to install a new utility pole and a recloser on Mill Street.
A National Grid representative, identified in the hearing as Mohammed, told the council the recloser "helps isolate outages" so that instead of larger outages affecting about 200 homes, only a smaller group — "maybe 10, 15 people" — would lose power and restoration would be quicker. The clerk recorded that all paperwork was on file and the fire department had no objections.
The council opened the hearing, invited the petitioner to speak, heard the explanation of the equipment’s function, and then closed the public portions; no members of the public registered in favor or opposition. The council then voted by hand and the petition was granted.
The petitioner will work with city staff and National Grid’s permits process to install the pole and the recloser at the location described in the petition filing.
