Commissioners approve Edmond Public Schools— temporary appropriations despite concerns about late filing

Oklahoma County commissioners on July 30 approved temporary appropriations that allow Edmond Public School District No. 12 to carry forward its spending authority for fiscal year 2025-26, but multiple commissioners raised concerns that the district submitted the paperwork late.

The clerk read the temporary appropriations request for Edmond Public School District No. 12 as follows: general fund $278,322,915; building fund $30,681,747; and child nutrition fund $13,799,489. The request was presented by the county finance department, office of the county clerk.

After the reading, a commissioner asked why the district had filed after June 30, the usual deadline for such submissions. The presiding officer said, "So they're late," and later added, "So they're spending with no authorization. That's the deal." Another commissioner suggested checking e-mail time stamps to determine when the paperwork was submitted.

Despite the concern about timing, the board voted to approve the temporary appropriations by voice vote. Commissioners instructed the clerk—s office to note the late filing and to follow up with Edmond School District on the submission date; one commissioner asked staff to report back at the next meeting about when the district submitted its paperwork.

The approval gives the school district temporary authority to spend in the new fiscal year while the county reviews the filing and any supporting documentation. The clerk's office identified the item as requested by the county finance department, and the board recorded no formal dissent during the July 30 session.
