MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Council members on Tuesday asked for a clearer plan on the conversion of city streetlights to LED fixtures and were told Mon Power is replacing lights as they fail and aims to complete conversions by 2026, subject to inventory and staffing limits.
A council member asked whether the replacements observed around town are part of a larger plan or are piecemeal fixes when fixtures fail. An engineering staff member who has met with Mon Power said the utility asked municipalities to submit replacement requests and that, where a light is reported out, the city requests LED replacements.
"We met with them last year ... they don't have the ability to go out there and do a mass replacement, and so they are doing them, you know, one at a time," the engineering staff member said. The staff member added Mon Power and its suppliers are working with multiple municipalities and that a complete, mass replacement has been tested in at least one municipality but is not available citywide due to manpower and inventory constraints.
Staff said Mon Power has a goal of completing LED conversions by 2026. Residents can report an out streetlight using the metal inventory tag on the pole; staff said the pole tag identifier lets the utility locate and replace the fixture on request.
Council members asked for a presentation about the program; staff said they will coordinate with Mon Power and invited a fuller briefing to a future meeting if council wants more detail.
