City staff and the council approved a form naming-rights agreement to support private fundraising for the city’s new community center and library project, and the council authorized a streamlined approval process for sponsorships that meet thresholds in the sponsorship brochure.
Lisa Bode, who presented the item, described the Mayor’s Circle fundraising group convened by Mayor Shelley Carlson and said the group seeks roughly $4,000,000 in private commitments to supplement sales-tax funding for the project. Bode said the Mayor’s Circle currently has about $400,000 in commitments and that “a couple of major decisions” by potential large donors were expected in August.
Included in council materials was a template naming-rights agreement that the city attorney had reviewed, Bode said, and a sponsorship guide the city would update as new commitments arrive. Bode asked the council to approve the form so that the mayor and city manager could execute agreements that meet the brochure minimums without bringing each one individually to council. She said the agreements would include conditions designed to protect both donors and the city and that naming rights would be for a 25-year period where appropriate.
Council member Lisa Borgen commended Bode and the Mayor’s Circle for fundraising work; the council approved the resolution by motion and voice vote. Bode said staff would still present donor acknowledgements during meetings and events even if the city manager or mayor executes lower-level agreements administratively.
No dollar amounts for individual naming rights were presented at the meeting; the sponsorship brochure included minimums and will be updated as commitments are finalized.
