The Verona Common Council approved a design-services contract with MSA Professional Services Inc. not to exceed $196,261 to replace three bridges on the Military Ridge State Trail, with construction planned for 2026.
Alder Tucker Long said bridge conditions were evaluated during trail design work and staff determined the bridges need replacement before the pavement project. Staff received three proposals for bridge design; the city recommended MSA based primarily on qualifications and its experience with similar bridge projects and with the Department of Natural Resources, staff said.
Why it matters: Replacing the bridges before paving is intended to avoid redoing pavement work and to ensure trail safety for users. The design work will precede a planned 2026 construction schedule.
MSA’s portfolio includes pedestrian-bridge design in the region and staff said the firm has a working relationship with state agencies managing the trail. Alder Blanco asked if selection considered price or qualifications; staff said the selection was primarily qualification-driven and pricing followed the qualifications review. The council approved the contract by voice vote.
