Peyton Griffin, a communications intern for the City of Lacey, told the Commission on Equity on July 28 that the commission’s May 28 veterans, active-duty and families community forum drew about 32 attendees and used small-group discussions to collect lived-experience feedback.
The forum highlighted strengths — attendees said Lacey felt more welcoming than neighboring cities and many reported visible community respect for military identity, Griffin said — and identified persistent gaps. Participants said inclusion sometimes remained symbolic rather than substantive, and they requested broader recognition of diverse military experiences, more pathways for early civic engagement, and better outreach to places such as Joint Base Lewis–McChord (JBLM) and local colleges.
