The Newnan City Council on July 22 approved a second reading to rezone two parcels at 521 and 531 Newnan Crossing Bypass to MXD, mixed‑use development, enabling a project that the applicant described as seven townhomes, 274 multifamily apartments and 7,700 square feet of commercial space. WP South Acquisitions LLC requested the rezoning. Council materials estimate monthly rents for the apartments at $1,500 to $2,750. Council previously considered the item at the June 17 meeting and approved it by a 4–2 vote; staff recommended a second reading because the city’s zoning ordinance still requires a second reading for amendments not approved unanimously. During the July 22 second reading, Council Member Cynthia Jenkins reiterated opposition, saying the city should be attracting developers to build more affordable housing rather than higher rent apartments. Council Member Dustin Kritko also recorded a dissenting vote. The rezoning passed with four yes votes and two no votes. The approval changes the parcels’ zoning from CCS (community shopping center) to MXD and allows the developer to proceed with required site plans, permits and construction approvals. Final design, permit timing and construction schedules were not presented at the July 22 meeting.
