District plans carpet‑tile flooring at Madison; asbestos testing, life expectancy and bid 'other services' line remain to be clarified
Summary
The board discussed a proposed flooring replacement at Madison Elementary that would use carpet tiles in classrooms and hallways; staff said asbestos testing and abatement will be done if needed, the expected commercial life expectancy of the carpet was not provided, and a $32,000 'other services' line on the bid requires clarification.

District staff presented a proposed interior renovation at Madison Elementary that would include new carpet‑tile flooring in classrooms and hallways, and answered board questions about asbestos abatement, carpet durability and bid line items.
Josh, the district facilities staff member presenting the item, said the renovation would replace original, aged flooring and that the district plans to use a carpet tile system, telling the board, “we're gonna go to a different style. We're gonna try carpet.” He said carpet tile is being adopted in other elementary schools to reduce noise and allow individual tiles to be replaced.
Director Beck asked whether the project would require asbestos abatement. Josh replied, “I would imagine it will. Yes. How much that will be at this time, I do not know off the top of my head.” The district said it routinely tests and, if necessary, contracts abatement work (Terracon was named as the firm the district typically uses for testing and removal). Board members also asked about the carpet’s expected commercial life expectancy and the bid’s “other services” line of about $32,000; Josh said he did not have those figures at the meeting but would provide them for the formal proposal.
The board was told the flooring decision would return for a vote at a later meeting and that the renovation work is part of a broader interior refresh that includes paint, graphics and new furniture. Staff noted they will provide details on asbestos abatement cost estimates, commercial life expectancy for the selected product, and a breakdown of the bid’s “other services” item when the item is posted for board action.
