Council reviews police camera, taser and impound‑lot improvements in CIP

The police department presented capital requests that include a body‑camera and in‑car‑camera package, replacement tasers and upgrades to the impound lot fencing and access gate. Chief Frank (police) asked for approximately $100,000 for a combined program of in‑vehicle and body cameras and related cloud services, noting that prices are under review and that staff is seeking lower quotes. He argued the cameras are important for evidentiary integrity and officer safety. The department also requested replacement tasers; Citing end‑of‑life for several tasers, staff said newer models have longer effective ranges and fewer operational limitations. Staff proposed a $50,072 request to replace impound‑lot fencing and electronic gates and to add screening to obscure vehicles from public view. Councilors asked whether the impound lot work should proceed if the police station relocates; staff replied that improved security and screening would still be beneficial. Finance Director Adam Thompson told the council there is roughly $105,000 available in the police confiscation fund and suggested staff could draw from that source if needed pending final quotes and council direction. Council asked police to seek multiple quotes, continue to refine the cost estimate and report back before the budget hearings.
