The Sioux City City Council approved a consent agenda that included a resolution increasing fares for the Sioux City Transit system, moving the monthly unlimited-ride pass from $48 to $50.
Council members noted the transit board unanimously recommended the increase and that fares had not been raised since July 1, 2010. "That will give us provided uninterrupted service," a council member said while explaining the rationale for the increase.
Staff said the increase was part of a broader review of all fare types and a comparison with regional transit systems, and that the city plans to implement a mobile fare-pay system this year; daily fares will be addressed after the mobile-pay rollout. The record shows officials cited rising labor, insurance and fuel costs as drivers for the adjustment.
Senior and disability day passes and student and token prices were not eliminated: the senior/disability day pass remains $2, the student pass remains $4 and tokens remain offered at the same price. Council members emphasized affordability: one council member noted the $2 monthly increase averages about 8 cents per day over six days of use. The council also said the transit board held a public hearing on the proposal but no members of the public attended.
The consent agenda containing the fare resolution and other items passed on a roll-call vote of 5–0: O'Kane, Janer, Scott, Waters and Moore voted aye.
The transcript does not record separate debate or a separate roll-call vote solely on the fare item; it was approved as part of the consent agenda.
