The Bedford County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with Republic Services to provide solid‑waste hauling and collection services for county collection sites, school facilities and select county buildings.
Solid‑waste staff said the existing contract with Republic Services expires this month and that the procurement produced bids showing Republic as the lowest responsive bidder for the county’s service mix and operational needs. The recommended contract keeps the current pull rate ($1,982 per pull) for collection sites steady in the new contract period; staff said Republic may request increases after the first four years under contract terms.
Staff noted Republic’s proposal included rental and maintenance of compactors and containers already in place at county sites, which helped maintain continuity and served the county’s operational timetable. A local hauler submitted a bid but staff said the local bidder’s proposal would have required the county to acquire containers and compactors rather than continuing to rent existing units; supervisors expressed sympathy for supporting local businesses but said the trade‑offs in capital cost, ongoing rental and continuity made Republic’s bid the practical choice.
The contract covers roll‑offs and site pulls at county collection centers, bays trash service for the school system and selected county buildings (the school system, county nursing home, animal shelter and other facilities were enumerated). Funding for the contract was in the approved budgets: general‑fund accounts for county building trash service and the solid‑waste budget for recycling and site collections.
The board voted on resolution R072825‑07 to authorize the county administrator to execute the contract; the motion passed on roll call.
