City committee moves to reimburse Summa Health for costs from failed city water main that flooded a surgical room

The public service committee advanced an ordinance to reimburse Summa Health Systems for remediation and repair costs stemming from a failed city water main that flooded a surgical room inside a Summa facility on Sept. 7, 2024.
Service Director Chris Ludlow told the committee the failure affected a water line connecting to a meter inside the building and required removal of drywall, flooring and extensive dehumidification in the surgical suite. Ludlow said Summa worked with city staff, relocated surgical patients to other rooms so no surgeries were delayed and that the city is coordinating with the meter manufacturer and installer regarding the failure.
The committee moved to suspend the rules and recommended approval of the reimbursement ordinance; the measure advanced to the full council agenda for final action.
