The public service committee recommended approval of two contracts with Rebuilding Together Northeast Ohio to administer housing repair programs for Akron residents.
The first ordinance authorizes a contract with Rebuilding Together to provide services for the Lehi Safe Akron lead‑abatement program; the second renews the group’s contract to operate the CDBG‑funded minor home repair program for fiscal years 2025–2026 at $400,000. Public service staff described the minor home repair program as assisting primarily seniors and low‑income disabled homeowners with projects such as roofs, hot water tanks, handicap showers and ramps; typical assistance runs up to roughly $10,000 per house but can be higher for roofs.
The minor home repair contract is intended to help approximately 50–70 senior households per year. The Lehi Safe Akron list of homeowners who receive assistance is published on the city website; rebuilding together provides yearly reports for the minor home repair program, the committee was told.
Committee members moved to suspend the rules and give both items a favorable report. The committee recorded the usual voice votes and advanced the measures to the full council agenda for the evening session.
Funding for the minor home repair program is Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money; the Lehi Safe Akron ordinance was described as a HUD pass‑through. Committee members asked for annual reports and lists of homeowners assisted; staff said they would provide the minor home repair yearly report and that Lehi Safe Akron homeowner lists are posted on the city website.
