Toyota Texas and East Central Independent School District officials on Tuesday outlined Driving Possibilities, a multi‑partner program they said will coordinate student supports, STEM career pathways and community services across the district. The program includes teacher professional development co‑led by Texas A&M University‑San Antonio and Project Lead The Way and a family resource center at Con Valley STEM Academy funded through United Way investments.
District leaders said Driving Possibilities places “the student at the center” and connects students, families, educators and business partners to address barriers such as food insecurity, transportation and access to mentors. A Toyota Texas representative told the board, “Driving possibilities is a new way of bringing schools and communities together to create limitless possibilities for all.”
Why it matters: district staff described the initiative as a combined academic and basic‑needs effort intended to strengthen STEM instruction and provide wraparound services for families across the district. Officials said teachers at Pecan Valley STEM Academy already began professional development with Project Lead The Way and Texas A&M‑San Antonio, and that coaches will support classroom implementation.
District and partner details: the district said the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County is investing “millions of dollars” to roll out a family resource center at Con Valley STEM Academy; the center will offer basic needs supports and referrals for families districtwide. The Toyota Texas representative said the project has two initial work streams — STEM instructional supports and basic needs — and that the STEM work will aim for vertical alignment across grade levels so students see STEM pathways from elementary through high school.
Implementation: the board was told the district has hired a project director for Driving Possibilities. District staff said they will schedule a ribbon cutting and invited trustees to participate. Jeanette Monala was introduced as the Driving Possibilities project manager and the liaison to Toyota USA; the district said Monala will coordinate between the district, schools and Toyota.
Partners and funding: presenters identified Project Lead The Way, Texas A&M University‑San Antonio and the United Way as key partners; the Toyota Foundation grant was mentioned as a funding source for parts of the initiative. Officials said additional statewide and national experts may be engaged as needs dictate.
Next steps: presenters said they will return to the board with implementation updates as phases roll out and will coordinate the ribbon cutting and other community events.
