The Lewisburg Area School District board voted to approve a one‑year trial establishing a competitive spirit (competitive cheer) program, with conditions that prioritize sideline cheer attendance at home events.
The motion, amended on the floor to specify a pilot year, followed committee discussion and concern about potential conflicts between competitive events (typically Friday–Saturday tournaments) and sideline obligations at winter boys’ basketball and wrestling home events. Administrators told the board that 14 students had participated in competitive events last year and that district rules proposed a requirement that participants also serve as sideline cheer members.
As amended, the board required that 75 percent of the squad attend most home events and that cheerleaders individually attend 75 percent of home sideline events; administrators noted some home games fall during winter break or meet timing that may be excused. Board members asked staff to report back at the end of the trial with data on squad size, attendance at home events and any conflicts with sideline obligations.
The board also discussed enforceability and recruitment: some trustees suggested the pilot would allow the district to evaluate whether competitive offerings reduce or increase participation in sideline cheer and whether the program draws students who would otherwise not join sideline activities. The motion passed with a roll call vote after the amendment to make the year a pilot.
The vote authorizes staff to proceed with staffing and operational steps necessary for the pilot season, subject to the district's usual coaching and supplemental‑pay rules.
