Newburgh manager to draft options on truck weight limits after council discussion

Town Manager Christopher Cook told the Town of Newburgh council on July 9 he will prepare a package of information on truck weight limits and enforcement options after councilors renewed calls for clearer local rules.
Councilors and staff recalled several years of discussion about weight limits, enforcement and exceptions for local deliveries and agricultural vehicles. Cook said statutes allow local regulation but include exceptions; he told council, "I'll put this together when there's a free moment and package it up and send it out." He also said he would review the Louisville model for guidance.
Council members said they want clarity on what the town can enforce and on exceptions for deliveries and farm vehicles. One councilor said they were not seeking punitive enforcement but want to reduce damage to town-owned infrastructure and safety risks. The town attorney noted statutory exceptions for local deliveries and agricultural vehicles exist.
No ordinance was introduced or amended at the July 9 meeting; the council directed staff to prepare a memorandum outlining legal constraints, model approaches, and enforcement options to consider at a future meeting.
