Board moves to advertise public hearing for Vanner Lane access and related land transfers to support 911 center access

County staff told the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors on July 28 that a planned extension of Vanner Lane will provide safer access to the regional 911 Center and that small parcel transfers and dedications are required to complete the alignment. The county converted the old Lomax Funeral Home into the regional 911 center and fire/rescue administrative offices. Staff said the existing Route 60 ingress/egress is steep and can be a sight‑distance problem; constructing an access point from the Food Lion area (an extension of Vanner Lane) was added as an alternate to an existing bid and is now being built by R.L. Price Construction as part of the social services building project.
Because the new road portion will be dedicated into the Buena Vista street system and requires a slight realignment, staff said two small areas of county land associated with the 911 center parcel must be conveyed to the city/town and that the county must advertise a public hearing for the transfers. Staff asked for authority to advertise a public hearing and to coordinate final documents with the cities of Lexington and Buena Vista; supervisors approved the request and set the matter for public hearing.
