Houston County is under a heat advisory, and the county's acting Emergency Management Agency director urged residents to stay hydrated and use shade, county officials said at a commission meeting. Jamie, acting EMA director, told the commission, “We are actually under a heat advisory.”
The EMA advised that expected air temperatures would be in the upper 90s to low 100s with heat-index values making it feel much hotter. Jamie urged residents who are outdoors to take breaks, use sunscreen and check on neighbors who may be vulnerable. “Take breaks if you're outside, use sunscreen,” Jamie said.
The EMA announced three designated cooling locations that will be open Monday through Wednesday to help residents escape the heat: Cottonwood Community Church (open 10 a.m.–5 p.m.), Kinsey Senior Center (8 a.m.–5 p.m.) and The Harbor (8 a.m.–5 p.m.). Jamie said the locations and additional heat-safety guidance (signs and symptoms of heat-related illness) would be posted to the EMA’s Facebook and Instagram pages and emailed to county departments.
No formal action was taken by the commission on the EMA presentation. The announcement was presented as public-health information and community guidance; the commission did not adopt new directives or emergency ordinances during the presentation.
Residents with urgent concerns about someone in the heat were advised to call local emergency services or visit one of the cooling sites, and the EMA asked county departments to share the posted information internally.
