Athletics supervisor highlights rising participation, new co‑ops and planned facility upgrades

Joshua Lanowitz, the district’s supervisor of athletics, told the Matawan‑Aberdeen Board of Education on July 21 that participation in the district’s interscholastic programs remains high and that administrators are planning new cooperative arrangements and facility improvements to support growth.

Lanowitz said the district recorded about 310 athletes last fall, with football the largest program at 88 participants, and that varsity teams are intact even as some lower‑level squads have seen declines. “We offer a number of things in the fall … marching band, football, girls soccer, boys soccer, cross country, girls tennis, dance, field hockey, and our esports team,” he said, summarizing the program mix.

The presentation outlined why the developments matter to students and the community: high participation keeps teams viable, co‑op arrangements can provide access to sports the district cannot run alone, and branding and facility work are intended to improve recruitment and fan engagement.
