WOODBURY COUNTY — The Board of Supervisors approved a budget reallocation to buy three pup trailers for county tandem trucks to improve gravel-hauling efficiency on local gravel-road projects.
Secondary Roads Director Laura Severson told the board the trailers would let tandem trucks haul loads nearly equivalent to a semi, reducing time spent hauling and lowering reliance on private haulers. “Each trailer costs about $75,000. We have 3 new trucks coming, and we have already had those trucks built to be able to pull trailers,” Severson said. She told the board the purchase would be funded by moving money from the granular-maintenance line into the new-equipment budget; she also said that using the trailers would not reduce funds for placing a six-inch gravel base on roads because the stockpiles would be managed differently.
Board members asked for clarification and staff confirmed a budget amendment would be processed to move the requested funding. Supervisors approved motions to receive the updated vendor quote (which offered the $75,000 per trailer price for a three-unit purchase) and to redirect the funds; both actions passed 4-0.
