SIOUX CITY — Agape Community Services has been awarded $2 million from federal opioid settlement funds to help build a residential addiction treatment facility for men in Woodbury County, the Board of Supervisors said in a weekly update.
Supervisor comments to the board described the award as the result of state-level review and advocacy. The board previously allocated $150,000 in local opioid funds to Agape to support startup and fundraising for the facility. The supervisors said the $2 million check arrived this week and would be used toward construction next to the new law enforcement center.
“I just wanna say thanks to the board for supporting that measure last year,” the supervisor who reported the award said, and thanked Sen. Alons, Sen. Costello and HHS director Kelly Garcia for support at the state level. Board members said a subsequent $1 million grant application is pending; if that award is successful the project team expects to break ground in September.
Action and next steps: The county’s prior $150,000 allocation remains in place and staff will continue to support Agape’s fundraising and permitting as the nonprofit proceeds toward construction. No county appropriation for construction was approved at the meeting; supervisors reported the federal award was sent directly to the project.
