Sumner County schools to distribute $2,000 teacher bonuses after budget amendment approved

Dr. Langford, director of schools for Sumner County, told the education committee on July 28 that the state legislature approved $2,000 bonuses for teachers in a January special session and that the district has enacted local resolutions to accept and distribute the money. He said the district could not budget the payment until the revenue was recorded locally and that an amendment to do so was on the committee agenda.

Langford said the Sumner County School Board passed a resolution in May and an amendment in June to accept the bonus funding, and that the legislature had provided the dollars in the special-session budget earlier this year. “We think we’ll be able to roll those out on Friday,” Langford said, referring to a special payroll that would follow the committee’s budget action. He added that the district communicated the timeline to teachers and that final distribution depended on the county budget action that night.

Committee minutes show members moved and seconded the item on the committee docket and approved it. Langford also reported that federal education funds had been released to the district. “All the federal money was released,” he said, adding that additional federal funds were expected to arrive later in the week and that the district was in a stronger financial position as a result. He cautioned that federal transfers are not always instantaneous but said this release was timely for upcoming operations.

The committee had no further questions about the amendment before it voted to approve the item. The director urged patience on exact pay dates while payroll processed the special payment and avoided specifying a calendar date for the special payroll in committee.
