The Historic Preservation Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for a new roof at 730 Gaines Street, a locally designated Italianate commercial-and-residential building in the Hamburg Local Landmark Historic District.
Staff said the building was built in 1867 and that the original roof material likely was cedar shake; permit records showed the building has used asphalt shingles since a re-roof in 1939. The present application seeks to remove existing cedar shake shingles and replace them with asphalt architectural shingles to match a barn on the same lot.
Jack Havenan, president of Gateway Redevelopment Group and the petitioner, told the commission “the roof is failing badly” and said cost and contemporary materials influenced the choice to use architectural asphalt shingles that complement the property’s existing outbuilding. He said the developer elected to match the earlier installation on the barn and that the selected product is an Owens Corning Duration series architectural shingle.
Commission discussion noted that while cedar shakes would be historically accurate, asphalt roofing had been on the building for many decades and replacement in kind with a high-quality architectural shingle would preserve the building’s character while addressing an urgent repair.
A motion to approve the COA passed on roll call; one member recorded an abstention and the remainder voted yes.
