Council adopts zoning changes to allow second dwelling units

On July 7 the West Des Moines City Council approved an amendment to Title 9 of the City Code to modify regulations pertaining to second dwelling units.
Council moved and approved the ordinance amendment on second reading, then voted to waive a third reading and adopt the ordinance in final form. The council recorded unanimous votes at each step.
Staff told the council there were no outstanding issues and no changes from the previous reading. The ordinance amends Chapter 9 zoning language to address second dwelling units (commonly called accessory dwelling units) and updates zoning rules and definitions in the code.
No public testimony was recorded on the item during the meeting. The adopted change now becomes part of the city’s zoning code and will guide future permitting and inspections for second dwelling units.
