The committee voted informally to create an ad hoc committee to establish a process for reviewing and approving public art projects and named four members to the panel.
Chair Ava Burns told members the goal is a clear intake and review form so artists and property owners can submit proposals to the committee, which would then recommend suitable projects to the Board of Supervisors when county approval is required. Burns said she had circulated a draft based on the Arts Council’s art and community grant materials and suggested the ad hoc adapt that format.
Gail, Cara, June and Janetta agreed to serve on the ad hoc. Committee discussion described a review approach currently used by the Arts Council in which reviewers score proposals at home, meet to discuss for about half an hour, and then refine recommendations at the meeting; members said that process has worked well in the past.
The committee emphasized that it will not bring project proposals to this committee until an actual project is developed. Members noted that projects requiring county approval also will need review by Historic Sites and Records when applicable.
No formal Board of Supervisors action was requested at the meeting; the ad hoc will report back with a draft review form and process recommendations so the committee can consider referring specific projects to the board later.
