Michigan House introduces slate of bills and refers measures to committees after brief session
Summary
During a short session that did not reach a quorum, members of the Michigan House introduced more than a dozen bills covering tax, mental health, civil rights, natural resources and other subjects and referred each measure to the appropriate standing committee for further consideration.
The Michigan House held a brief session in which representatives formally introduced a group of bills and referred them to standing committees, but the body did not establish a quorum and took no floor votes.
Representative Tisdale introduced House Bill 4747, a bill “to amend the Income Tax Act of 1967.” Representative Outman introduced House Bill 4,748 to amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. Representative Roth introduced House Bill 4,749 to amend the Revised Judicature Act of 1961. Representative Schmalz introduced House Bill 4,750 to amend the Foster Care and Adoption Services Act. Representative Schreiber introduced House Bill 4,751 to amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and later House Bill 4,752 to amend the Mental Health Code. Representative Shriver introduced House Bill 4,753 to amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. Representative Tate introduced House Bill 4754 to amend the Income Tax Act of 1967. Representative Jenkins Arnaud introduced House Bill 4,755 to amend the Michigan Consumer Protection Act. Representative Johnson introduced House Bill 4,756 to amend the Michigan State Capitol Historic Site Act. Representative Slaw introduced House Bill 4,757 concerning investment of funds of public corporations of the state. Representative Menser introduced House Bill 4,758 to require each Michigan Works agency to provide certain reemployment services. Representative Miller introduced House Bill 4,759 to encourage public employers to conduct an expedited hiring process for certain individuals. Representative Kofi introduced House Bill 4760 to amend the Michigan Penal Code.
Each bill was placed on its first reading by title and referred to the committee named on the floor (for example, bills addressing tax matters were referred to the Committee on Finance; natural-resources measures were referred to the Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism; judicial and civil-rights measures were referred to the Committee on Judiciary or Government Operations as stated on the floor). The introductions recorded on the floor were first readings only; none of the measures received a floor vote during this session.
The introductions move the measures into committee for hearings, amendment and further consideration. Committee actions, hearings or votes will determine whether any of the bills advance to a second reading or to the full House for debate and a vote.
