LACONIA, N.H. — The City Council voted on July 28 to schedule a public hearing for Sept. 8 to receive input on a petition to accept Thompson Avenue as a public highway.
City staff said Thompson Avenue is currently a private street whose property owners have requested dedication to the city; staff reported the street has necessary easements and that all neighbors on the street had signaled support for the change. The planning board will also review the road because it was never formally laid out.
Public Works reviewed the street and provided preliminary cost estimates to the city manager: an increase in annual maintenance of roughly $7,500 and potential future road-project costs around $24,000 if the city must perform reconstruction to meet city standards. Staff said these were planning estimates and that a full engineering review will be part of the public hearing record.
Councilor Cheney moved and Councilor Soucy seconded a motion to set a public hearing for Sept. 8, 2025; the motion passed 6-0. Councilors and staff noted additional outreach and notice would be required to inform property owners and residents ahead of the hearing.
What happens next: the city will notify affected property owners and schedule the Sept. 8 public hearing; the planning board will also provide input before council deliberation.
