The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a mechanical-equipment alteration at 122 East 60th Street in the Upper East Side Historic District that relocates three through‑wall louvers from beneath fifth‑floor windows to a position above the windows and just below a projecting balcony.
Michelle Shabrami of LPC staff explained staff rules allow louvers below window openings as a staff-level matter but not above; because the proposal moves the louvers to a less prominent location just beneath a deep balcony and removes three more prominent louvers elsewhere on the façade, the application came to the commission for review. The new louvers will be rimless, flush mounted and painted to match surrounding masonry; the openings left by the removed louvers will be filled with painted brick to blend with the façade.
Zeynep (Zainab) Turan of Friends of the Upper East Side supported the application because of its limited and restorative scope. Manhattan Community Board 8’s committee also recommended approval.
Commissioners agreed the proposed relocation and infill would support the primacy of the building’s historic features; the motion passed 6–0.
