LPC approves refined canopy design for Hampton Shops building at 18 East 50th Street

The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved July 15 a new canopy for the individually landmarked Hampton Shops building at 18 East 50th Street after the applicant revised the design to make it visually lighter and more clearly related to the building’s Gothic detailing. Alex Komatsianos, principal at Perkins Eastman and the project’s designer, presented a narrower structural profile, point-supported fritted glass and brushed stainless-steel pin mounts to reduce apparent bulk. The design team explained that the canopy’s structural members were reduced from roughly 10–12 inches to about four inches in visible width and that the canopy was lowered to align with existing light fixtures in the portal. Commissioners said the revisions addressed earlier concerns that the canopy appeared too heavy. Commissioner Chen recommended approval, noting that the canopy “will recall in a contemporary manner historic marquees often found on buildings of this age and style.” Commissioner Ginsburg seconded; the motion passed with all commissioners present voting in favor. Staff and applicants said the canopy will be supported by structural connections into the existing piers, with stone (terracotta) removed and retained where feasible and replaced in kind if damaged; drainage will be sloped back to scuppers routed into pier drains. The project team noted coordination with the Department of Transportation on the canopy projection and that the applicant is maintaining required clearances from the curb. A letter from the Historic Districts Council was submitted in advance and shared with commissioners. The commission’s approval covers the canopy as revised; permit-level details, including terracotta matching and final attachment detailing, will be coordinated with staff prior to permit issuance.
