Atchison approves $25,850 for servicing and potential parts replacement on water-plant ozone analyzers

The Atchison City Commission voted June 16, 2025, to authorize staff to hire GSO Services to inspect, calibrate and service 11 ozone analyzers at the city—urrent water treatment plant, approving budget authority of $25,850.

Clinton McNamee, who presented the item, said the analyzers monitor ozone levels used for disinfection and for improving water color and taste. "These analyzers, they monitor the level of ozone that's in the water. So, basically, they're critical for us being able or for the system to be able to control the process," McNamee said.

McNamee said the vendor—stimated $17,600 for service and recommended holding a contingency of $750 per analyzer for parts that may be needed during service, producing a combined budget authority request of $25,850 (service $17,600 plus up to $8,250 for parts). He noted that specialized technicians for ozone systems are limited and that the work ensures operators can control treatment processes.

Commissioners moved and seconded the authorization; the motion passed on a voice vote. Vice Mayor Wilcox and other commissioners voiced support before the aye vote was taken. The contract authority covers the inspection, recalibration and any parts replacements the vendor identifies during service.

McNamee said the need is current even as the city considers alternatives such as well water; any switch to wells would require a separate analysis of treatment needs. Staff will report back if parts replacement exceeds the contingency or if additional budget authority is required.
