The Henry County Council voted to set 0.1 as the maximum potential rate for the county’s emergency-medical-services local income tax (EMS LIT). The motion to set the maximum passed 6-1. Council members and staff clarified that this action only establishes a ceiling for later consideration; it does not change the current EMS LIT rate. A public hearing to set any actual rate is expected to be scheduled around September.
Council members said the item was procedural: today’s vote merely authorizes the council to consider raising the EMS LIT up to the 0.1 cap at a future hearing. One council member asked for confirmation that the current EMS LIT rate remained at 0.04; staff confirmed the current rate stands and that any change would take effect in a later budget year if adopted through the required hearings and notice procedures.
Council leaders opened the meeting for public comment; fire, EMS and municipal representatives attended. No final rate was adopted at this meeting. Council members emphasized that the September hearing will provide a fuller record and opportunity for public testimony before the body adopts a final rate.
The council recorded the 6-1 vote in favor of setting the 0.1 maximum. Staff said they will circulate hearing dates and required public notices to taxing districts and local stakeholders.
