The Town of Merrillville council on an evening meeting received multiple stormwater updates, including a $462,602 purchase of a new jet-vac truck and a completed drainage analysis for Hendricks Street paid from the town’s stormwater fund.
Stormwater manager Matt Lake told the council the jet-vac purchase will be run through Sourcewell and that the town secured a $130,000 trade-in allowance on the existing truck. “The amount was $462,602,” Lake said, and “we got a trade in of a $130,000 for our existing jetpack truck.”
The council also heard details about an $82,236.81 Hendricks Street drainage effort. Lake said the Hendricks Street work covers the segment “from Turkey Creek, which is north of 70 Third all the way to the railroad tracks” and that the scope included survey work, plans and specifications rather than just an analysis. “So it's probably underrepresented as an analysis. So it's a full blown set of plans that we'll be receiving,” he said.
Lake reported other stormwater projects moving toward completion: a nearly finished project at 6 Tenth Connecticut Street, a recently held groundbreaking at Hickory Ridge with a likely ribbon cutting in about four weeks, and progress on property acquisitions for work at 97 and Grama, where the town secured agreement from two sellers (an easement and a purchase).
The equipment purchase and projects were presented as informational reports; no formal council action on procurement or contract awards was recorded during the meeting. Lake said the jet-vac purchase leverages Sourcewell pricing to obtain the stated total and trade-in value.
The updates come as the town continues multiple capital stormwater projects and survey/design work intended to reduce chronic drainage problems in several neighborhoods. The council did not vote on additional stormwater funding during the session.
Officials said they will return with further contract documents and project schedules as the procurement and easement negotiations proceed.
