Saint Sava church granted variance for LED message center on existing sign

The Town of Merrillville Board of Zoning Appeals approved a request from Saint Sava’s Serbian Orthodox Church to insert a 2-by-11-foot LED message center into an existing sign on property zoned A-1 agricultural. Jason Moorhead of Landmark Sign Group presented the proposal and said the work will replace fluorescent lamps with LEDs, install new sign faces, and raise the base roughly 4 feet to improve visibility.
A staff report described the requested variance as relief from Section 21-189(8) to allow an electronic message center on a sign in an agricultural district. The petitioner stated the sign sits with adequate setback and that the change would improve the church’s image. The board asked about electrical and data connections; Moorhead said the message center will run on the sign’s power, and the electronic message panel will be driven by a data connection.
No members of the public spoke in opposition. A motion to approve the variance carried; voting members recorded their approvals on the motion.
