Chief (name not specified) told the Metropolitan Police Commission that Merrillville saw elevated call volume in both April and May and presented monthly statistics the commission accepted by vote.
For April, the chief reported 2,637 calls for service generating 4,636 officer responses; 358 citations; 11 OWI arrests; 156 warnings; 384 traffic stops; 139 adult arrests; eight juvenile arrests; and 29 thefts. He said domestic batteries were high, with 25 incidents reported in April.
For May, the chief reported 2,681 calls for service and 4,959 officer responses, 111 state accident reports, 393 traffic stops resulting in 450 citations, nine OWI arrests, 106 adult arrests and six juvenile arrests. He said batteries and domestic batteries for May were 11 and six, respectively, and May included 38 thefts.
Commissioner Catino moved and Commissioner Pollock seconded motions to accept each month's statistics; both motions carried on voice votes. The commission did not direct further action beyond accepting the reports.
The statistics were presented as operational data for the commission’s oversight; commissioners asked no substantive follow-up during the meeting.
As presented, the figures show recent increases in calls and officer responses across the two-month span; the chief noted a particular increase in domestic incidents in April.
