Commission to staff Juneteenth table, bridal celebration and summer park events; shifts and materials discussed

The commission agreed to staff a table at the Juneteenth celebration on Thursday, June 19, and to participate in a bridal celebration occurring later that weekend. Commissioners discussed volunteer shifts, with a tentative plan for two shifts (noon–2 p.m. and 2–4 p.m.) to provide coverage without requiring anyone to staff an entire day.

Meeting discussion identified the Juneteenth site as the South Sixth District parking lot at 925 Highway 6 East; the event is presented by the Black Voices Project and includes a freedom walk, live performances, a fashion show, food and family activities. The agenda and flyer discussed in the meeting did not list firm times for vendor hours; staff said organizers need to provide exact hours and promotional material for city reposting.

For the bridal celebration the commission noted past staffing challenges — long days and materials running out — and suggested earlier relief shifts (for example, having a volunteer relieve the morning shift by about 2 p.m.). Commissioners reported the commission has two tables and about five chairs available from the office for events.

Commissioners were also invited to take outreach tables at Party in the Park, a city-sponsored weekly event that runs Thursdays from June 12 through Aug. 14 and rotates among neighborhood parks. Staff said they will circulate the event schedule and provide brochures and outreach materials to commissioners who volunteer to host a table in their local park.

The commission discussed inventory of yard signs and banners for Pride and other events; staff said a small number of yard signs remain available from last year and are held at the front desk (8 a.m.–5 p.m.). No formal vote was recorded on these outreach plans; commissioners generally signaled support and volunteered for shifts.
