The Iowa City Human Rights Commission voted to approve a $250 sponsorship request for the Welcome Weekend committee’s September events, but made the approval conditional on the committee submitting an itemized budget.
Commissioners were presented a short description of Welcome Weekend, which organizers described as the committee’s third annual celebration of community diversity. The weekend will include an east-side block party, an outdoor multicultural service and free community meal, cultural displays, music and children’s activities at Mercer Park.
During discussion commissioners noted the application form indicated an itemized budget attachment was required but none was included in the packet. The commission’s motion to approve the $250 request specified that funding approval would be contingent on the submission of a reasonable, itemized event budget. The motion carried.
Commissioners also discussed nonfinancial ways the city and commission can support events. Staff said the city will promote events that receive city funding; the commission may also promote events it supports when organizers provide promotional materials directly to staff for reposting.
The Commission recorded no additional conditions on the award; staff will notify organizers that the sponsorship is approved pending submission of the requested budget detail.
