Annie Mahan, Vermillion County Veterans Service Officer, updated the board on June activity: she reported 46 active veteran files, 109 claims filed during June, six walk‑in claim filings and 22 other appointments or home visits for the month.
Mahan said American Legion Post 108 in Saint Bernice will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on Friday, July 4, at 3 p.m. at Portland Park. She asked veterans and local scout groups to participate and said the county has five American Legion posts but many longtime members are aging; she proposed creating a countywide honor guard to distribute funeral and ceremony responsibilities more broadly.
Mahan said she had been working with Thrive West Central to identify homes eligible for an owner‑occupied rehab grant and plans to begin outreach to rural areas after the July 4 holiday. She also said she has made multiple referrals to Indiana Legal Services for veterans with claims related to toxic exposure. When asked about turnaround time from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, she described a mix of claim types (Agent Orange and burn pit/TARO claims among them) and said some cases involve multiple claim filings.
No formal board action was required on the VSO report; Mahan asked residents to contact the VSO office for assistance.
