Euclid hires firefighter; commission removes two names from eligibility list

The City of Euclid Civil Service Commission voted June 3 to approve the hiring of Connor Trick as a firefighter, with an effective start date of June 9, 2025, and to remove two candidates from the Euclid Fire Department entry-level eligibility list.

The action followed a June 3 letter from Mayor Christian Hoseimer Gail asking the commission to approve the appointment. The letter stated, “I’m respectfully requesting your approval to appoint 1 new firefighter. Candidate Connor Trick has been selected from the Euclid Fire Department's current entry level eligibility list. Certified 01/21/2025.”

Fire Chief Womack told the commission the department also sought removal of two names from the certified list. “The fire department would like to remove a couple candidates. We'd like to remove Connor Trick, who we are giving a job to off the list, making room for more people to be considered for future positions. And we would also like to remove Corey Furnace, who is number 7 on the list. We were about to hire him, and he recently took a job in Avon Lake. So that would be a removal by request,” Womack said.

Commissioners moved and seconded the motions to approve the hire and to remove both candidates from the eligibility list. Each motion passed on a voice vote with commissioners answering “Aye.” The commission recorded the effective hire date for Trick as June 9, 2025; the eligibility list from which he was appointed was certified Jan. 21, 2025. The transcript identifies Trick as candidate number 58 on that list and Furnace as number 7.

Commissioners asked no follow-up questions during the discussion. The commission then returned to other business and adjourned at about 2:15 p.m.

The decisions affect the Euclid Fire Department's entry-level hiring list and open additional consideration slots for future hires.
