APC director reports county council rezoning approvals, amended solar valuation guarantee and new staff hires

APC Director Sean Klein told the commission on July 15 that the County Council approved several items at its July 8 meeting and that staff staffing changes have filled key positions.
Klein said the council approved a rezoning of property at Larson and Fillmore from an agricultural district to an I (industrial) district. A separate rezoning in Lakeville (102 South Michigan) from town center to OB (office buffer) remained pending before the town and was scheduled for a July 24 hearing, Klein said.
Klein also reported the county council approved an amended version of a proposed renewable-energy-systems property-value guarantee. "It was amended such that it would only apply within 1 mile of the property, would not apply to small scale, so only to large scale solar installations, and it would not apply in the I Industrial District," he said. Because the county council amended the measure, Klein said the amended version will return to the APC for consideration at the August APC meeting; members will receive an amended packet with the changes highlighted.
Klein concluded with staffing updates: the APC welcomed a new planner, Adia Smith, and filled its MTE code-enforcement position with Jeff Murawski, formerly of the Saint Joseph County Health Department. "So we are now fully staffed," Klein said.
These remarks were presented as director updates; no formal APC action was taken on these items at the July 15 meeting. The renewable-energy measure will appear on the APC August agenda for a formal recommendation based on the county council’s amendments.
