Resident pushes county to require four-quadrant gates at high-risk railroad crossings

During the public-comment period on July 1, Dan Carter of Edison Road urged the county to require four-quadrant gate systems at railroad crossings he identified as unsafe in western Saint Joseph County.
Carter said four-quadrant gates would deter drivers from going around lowered gates and described witnessing vehicles, including a FedEx truck, circumvent gates at local crossings. He recommended the county require four-quadrant systems at crossings with two or more tracks and at crossings with high-speed trains, whether single- or multi-track.
Commissioners acknowledged the concern and one speaker noted the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) and its long-range planning include crossing safety as an element; the commissioner who spoke said further action would be forthcoming. Carter urged prioritizing safety upgrades before spending on other projects that would affect rail operations.
