Commissioners award annual highway material bids; fuel/oil awards tabled for further review

The Saint Joseph County Board of Commissioners on July 8 approved awards for several annual highway material bid packages and voted to table the bid award for fuel, oil, lubricants and miscellaneous materials pending additional review.
Adam Via, presenting for the Department of Infrastructure Planning and Growth, said the county typically awards any complete bids and then orders per lowest price and availability at time of need. “If the first supplier cannot get the material to us within a timely manner, we would move to the second lowest bidder and third lowest bidder,” Via said, explaining that awards are made to multiple bidders and orders are placed based on price and availability.
The board approved awards for bituminous patching materials, liquid bituminous materials, miscellaneous aggregates, and traffic paint and signage. Commissioners then agreed to table the bid award for fuel, oil, lubricants and miscellaneous materials to allow staff additional time to review the submissions; staff indicated the tabling would return to the next week's meeting.
Roll-call votes were taken for the motions on the awarded packages; the tabling motion passed and the chair confirmed the item would be ready for recommendation at the following meeting.
