Council temporarily waives ZIP transit fares for students through start of school

The Beaumont City Council on July 15 approved a resolution directing the ZIP transit system to temporarily waive fares for students who present a valid student ID from July 15 through August 12, 2025, the district’s posted start date. A city transportation staff member said the waiver was requested to help students reach educational programming, jobs, and community events during the last weeks of summer. Jackie Simeon, director of community and media relations for Beaumont ISD, told the council BISD supported the initiative: "By removing that obstacle, even temporarily, we open doors that might otherwise remain closed," she said. Council voted to approve the temporary waiver. Staff said they plan to work with Beaumont ISD and community partners to design a permanent annual program for future summers. Ending: The waiver covers student rides while BISD summer transit is paused; staff will coordinate with partners on a longer‑term approach for future summers.
