Council authorizes $1.8 million in road work tied to Toyota Material Handling campus

Columbus City Council on June 3 authorized the Redevelopment Commission to expend $1.8 million for roadwork connected to the Toyota Material Handling facility annexed earlier this year, approving the resolution 8–0.
Redevelopment staff said Toyota built a roughly 295,000-square-foot electric-forklift facility on a 65-acre parcel (annexed and rezoned after the company’s groundbreaking) and that the road improvements were part of the agreement with the company. The work will include widening and ditch installation along County Road 225 West from Diva Road to County Road 300 South; trail construction along County Road 300 South; realignment of County Road 225 West; a pedestrian crosswalk near Diva Road; and other intersection items.
Staff reminded council that the project had been split into two phases: a previously approved utility portion (a not-to-exceed $3,791,431 sanitary sewer contract completed by Bowen Engineering) and now the road-work portion estimated at $1,800,000. The Redevelopment Commission approved the road-work funding on May 27 and found sufficient funds in the central allocation area to cover the request.
Council discussion noted this is a large investment but framed it as necessary as developable land becomes harder to secure; one council member said the work will be a “big value add.” The resolution passed 8–0.
