Commission discusses targeted rent assistance for new downtown businesses; item to return Aug. 5

Commissioners on July 28 discussed targeted economic-development assistance for new or expanding local businesses and said decisions on incentives are brought before the commission for approval.
Commissioner Card said the city met with the new coffee business (referred to as "Nikos") and that "the city is gonna give some funds to help her out on rent side." Staff clarified that targeted incentives are presented to the commission so members can approve or deny them; staff said not all businesses will be incentivized and that businesses offering limited services (for example, breakfast only) may not qualify.
Commissioners also noted recent business activity: Bliss Beach is back open and Luna's restaurant appears to be drawing patrons. Staff said the specific rent-assistance item will be on the Aug. 5 agenda for commission consideration.
No formal action on incentives was taken at the special meeting; the commission will consider the proposal at its regular August meeting.
