Black Hills Energy donates $2,330 to Liberal Fire Department for rescue training equipment

Black Hills Energy presented a $2,330 check to the Liberal Fire Department on the commission meeting agenda to buy a rescue training mannequin and accessories.
The donation came from the Black Hills Corporation Foundation’s new Funds for Firefighters project, which provides awards of $100 to $2,500 to fire departments in Black Hills service territories. Elise Torres, representing Black Hills Energy of Liberal, said the program was created to “honor and engage our Black Hills employees that are also volunteer firefighters.”
Torres introduced two employees who also serve as volunteer firefighters, Ronnie Sumner and Eric Smallridge, and presented the check to the department. Kelly, a representative of the Liberal Fire Department, told commissioners the department requested a Rugged Red rescue mannequin and extra “leggings” to protect the mannequin when dragged on asphalt or concrete. Kelly said the purchase will support revised training practices the department has adopted in recent months.
The department and Black Hills Energy officials thanked each other for the partnership and noted the donation as part of ongoing cooperation between the utility and the city’s emergency services. No formal action or vote was required for the presentation.
