The Pueblo West Metro District Board voted Wednesday to approve a contract and resolution with Star Playgrounds to replace the playground at Pixie Park, a small neighborhood park serving the mobile-home area off Purcell.
Carol Cosby, director of Parks and Recreation, told the board the equipment is at least 25 years old, does not meet current ADA safety standards and has not been substantially replaced. The district budgeted $100,000 for the project in the 2025 budget. Staff said the vendor’s option chosen totaled $89,181 and that the district submitted a request to Pueblo County for up to $90,000 in Conservation Trust Funds (CTF) reimbursement to be allocated to this capital project.
Cosby said the replacement will include engineered wood fiber surfacing, a sidewalk from the parking lot to provide accessible access, regular swings and climbing features for 5–12 year olds. The board’s motion to approve the contract passed with all votes in favor; the motion and second are not identified by name in the meeting record.
Staff explained that the CTF reimbursement requires the district to allocate the project in its budget, then submit for reimbursement to the county; once the county approves, the district will be reimbursed up to the approved amount.
Construction requires the board to sign the resolution and contract by June 13 to lock in the proposed price; staff recommended approving the contract at this meeting to avoid a price increase or scheduling conflict.
