Council approves first reading to abandon portion of Bob Duncan Drive right-of-way

The Arlington City Council on May 27 approved a first reading ordinance to vacate and abandon a portion of public street right-of-way for Bob Duncan Drive (formerly Post Oak Street) from the south right-of-way of Harrison Avenue to 275 feet south, while reserving the area as an access, drainage and utility easement.
Keith Brooks, director of Public Works, said the abandonment request came from an abutting property owner seeking to eliminate foot traffic that crossed the dead-end right-of-way to access nearby railroad tracks. Brooks said there are no plans to extend Bob Duncan Drive south of the railroad tracks and that vehicular access to the two abutting properties would be maintained. He told council the original right-of-way was dedicated by plat at no cost to the city and that there were no objections from abutting property owners or franchise utility companies.
Council member Odom Wesley moved and Council member Gonzales seconded the motion; the council voted to approve the ordinance on first reading. Staff did not report any public speakers on the item. The abandonment will keep the area in place as an access, drainage and utility easement and will advance through the city’s ordinance-adoption process.
