Engineering reports Main Street traffic switch; Public Works lists service metrics, alley repairs

Jason Brautigan, Director of Engineering Services, told council that Main Street construction has reached a first traffic switch between First and Fifth/Sixth; the intersection at Fifth and Main has reopened and the north‑side work is progressing. Brautigan said temporary concrete and discolored pavement in some areas is intentional to reserve locations for forthcoming brick pavers and that a south‑side traffic switch is planned in two to three weeks to open additional intersections. He said storm pipe installation was underway on the north side and that sidewalk landscaping will be timed with planting seasons, probably this fall.
Gabe Johnson, Director of Public Works, briefed council on departmental metrics and maintenance programs. He reported approximately 13,000 service requests in April that generated roughly 5,000 work orders. Street sweeping covered 53 zones and stormwater combined with a third‑party sweeper handles areas such as thoroughfares. Johnson said alley construction funded from bond allocations is underway (the city maintains more than 200 miles of alleys) and volunteers collected about 1,700 pounds of litter during an Earth Day event coordinated by the environmental services team.
Council members asked timing and landscaping questions and thanked staff for the work. No formal actions were taken; both departments will continue project‑level coordination with council and report back as construction milestones are reached.
